World Mental Health Day 2026: Real Voices, Real Change

World Mental Health Day 2026 falls on Saturday 10 October, and this year’s theme puts people at the centre of the conversation: “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change”. It is a reminder that the people who know most about mental ill health are often the people who have lived through it.

At JustMental, we believe mental health affects every one of us, whatever our age, gender or background. That is why this year’s theme matters so much to us, and why we hope you will take a moment today to listen, to share, or simply to check in on someone.

What Is World Mental Health Day 2026 About?

World Mental Health Day was founded in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), which chooses the theme each year. For 2026, the WFMH has set the theme “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change”, and is encouraging organisations around the world to hold events that reflect it.

The WFMH is also asking organisations to support the World Health Organization’s work on deinstitutionalisation: moving care away from large, isolated institutions and towards support in the community, closer to people’s homes, families and lives.

Why Lived Experience Matters

Lived experience is the knowledge that comes from going through something yourself, or alongside someone you love. It cannot be learned from a textbook. It can tell services what actually helps, what gets in the way, and what it feels like to be on the other side of the waiting room.

The scale of the need is clear. According to the World Health Organization, more than one billion people around the world are living with mental health conditions, with anxiety and depression among the most common. Behind that figure are individual people, each with a story worth hearing.

Hearing those stories also helps to break down stigma. When someone says “this happened to me”, it becomes easier for the next person to say “me too”.

Real Voices on JustMentalTalk

Giving people the space to be heard is at the heart of JustMentalTalk. This week we released our conversation with Nikella Holmes and Michelle Duffy, founding members of the Northern Ireland Survivor Council, a volunteer-run organisation here in Northern Ireland.

If you have not listened yet, World Mental Health Day 2026 is a fitting moment to do so. It is available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and justmental.net.

How You Can Mark the Day

You do not need to organise an event to be part of World Mental Health Day 2026. Small things count:

Where to Find Support

If World Mental Health Day 2026 brings up difficult feelings, you are not alone and you do not have to wait to reach out.

Lifeline, Northern Ireland’s crisis response helpline, is available 24 hours a day, every day, on 0808 808 8000 (textphone 18001 0808 808 8000). Calls are free for people living in Northern Ireland from UK landlines and mobiles. You can also speak to your GP.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999.

Real voices create real change, but only when someone is listening. On World Mental Health Day 2026, and every day after it, let’s make sure we are.
